All Veterans that come into the OTOW house are given food, clothing and of course a home. They are also given assistance with obtaining their VA benefits and this is one of the biggest obstacles for most of the veterans. In order to get them, they need to meet with people usually countless times. Some of our vets had been fighting for these benefits for years with no results. It is the unfortunate bureaucracy that keeps these veterans from obtaining their benefits. It is almost impossible to keep a job while fighting to get their benefits. Of course, that makes it difficult to keep a home if you are unable to keep a job. If you factor in the struggles with PTSD that some of them face and lack of a support system as they transition from the military back to civilian life, it’s an uphill battle that can be too much for one person to handle alone. Ode to Our Warriors puts them in contact with someone that is able to navigate some of the challenges involved in obtaining those benefits. They are given a place to call home while they do this surrounded by a support system.
Veteran Daniel
When we met Daniel, he was homeless. He had not had anything other than bread and water to eat and drink for three months. Daniel was such a hard worker and had put his children above himself. In order to provide for them, he did without. OTOW gave him a home and a vehicle. He also took the money management class and was given assistance in getting his VA benefits. He acquired a good steady job that gave him the stability he needed to get his three children and he now has a home where they can live as a family. OTOW helped him get his boys into a school. Through Daniels hard work and perseverance, he was promoted at his job.
